Abednego Emmanuel Jackson, affectionately known as Uncle Ben, departed this life on April 30,
2025, at the age of 97. Born on July 27, 1927 in New York, Abednego led a remarkable life
characterized by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and community.
A proud Navy veteran, he served his country with honor before embarking on a successful
career as a construction worker.
Abednego was not only a man of his trade but also a man of faith. He spent over 40 years as a
deacon at Beulah Baptist Church in New York, where he made a lasting impact on the
congregation and built connections that spanned generations. His unwavering faith was
accompanied by his love for the outdoors, with camping and fishing being cherished pastimes
that he enjoyed with family and friends. A local “celebrity,” he had a remarkable ability to
connect with everyone he met, fostering friendships that enriched his life and the lives of those
around him.
In addition to his wonderful sense of character, Abednego was a gifted cook. His culinary skills
were crafted during his time at culinary school, and he became skilled in the kitchen and known
for his delicious meals that delighted family gatherings. His love for crossword puzzles and
reading the newspaper illustrated his curious mind and his desire to stay engaged with the
world around him.
He is predeceased by his loving wife, LaConia Williams Jackson; his daughter, Michelle Fraser;
and his sister, Marion Clemmons.
Abednego is survived by his daughters, Lana Jackson and Lisa (Gordon) DeShazer; as well as
several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren who carry forward his
legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.
