Al Gulley, Jr., age 87, of Lithia Springs GA passed away, Saturday, July 22, 2023 at his residence. Al was born on November 30, 1935, in Ashdown, AR, to his loving parents, Alfred and Ada Gulley. He was known for his great sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter to everyone who knew him. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Al Gulley; daughter, Sonya Burton; brother, Clinton Gulley; sisters, Bobby Jones, Effie Walker, Lessie Peguee, Bessie Wilbur, Odessia Gulley, Gertie Smith and Adelaide Butler; great-grandmother, Kaitlyn Gulley.

Al confessed his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ashdown, Arkansas. He also joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Thomson, GA, and he completed the Growth Track at Chapel Hill Church in Douglasville, GA.

Al served in the Air Force during his military career. His passion for serving extended beyond his military service to his work at the post office, where he diligently served the community for many years. Al's commitment and dedication were unmatched, and he earned the respect of both his colleagues and those he encountered during his service. Al was 32nd degree Shriner in San Antonio, TX.

Outside of work, Al had numerous hobbies and interests that brought him happiness. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Falcons and enjoyed watching sports. In his leisure time, Al loved playing cards, tending to his yardwork, listening to music, dancing, and enjoying meals at Waffle House and IHOP. He also cherished watching movies with his dear granddaughter Alexis. Most of all, he loved saying “my wife” and bringing joy and happiness in her life.

Al's education journey led him to earn an Associate’s Degree in Science, a testament to his constant pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement throughout his life such as an instructor at Ms. Dee’s Beauty school. This commitment mirrored his personal values of growth and excellence. Throughout his life, Al touched the lives of many with his infectious laughter and warm personality. He will always be remembered for his commitment to service and his ability to brighten any room he entered. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory forever be a blessing to those who cherish him.

He is survived by his devoted wife Phyllis Neal-Gulley of forty-one (41) years; sons James “Mike” (Essie) Gulley and Gregory Neal; sister Katherine Houze; grandchildren Kristi Gulley-Williams, Carol Gulley, James Gulley, Alexis Neal, Al Gibran Gulley, Jr, Quintisha Lyles, Isaiah Neal, Jeremiah Wilson and Ashley “Baby Bear” Williams; great-grandchildren, Samya Williams, Sanaia Gulley, Corbin Cooper, Kamryn Tucker, Jordan Ellison, London Gulley, Mila Gulley, and Faith Green. As well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other family and friends. Al also had three devoted friends, Eugene Carter, Al Stafford (affectionately known as P), and special thanks to Tammy Soto-Rodriguez for her acts of kindness.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Jones-Wynn - Douglas Chapel located at 2189 Midway Road in Douglasville, GA. from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 PM with pastor Debora Grant-Scotland officiating. Following the memorial, the inurnment will take place at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, starting at 3:00 PM.
