CDR Albert Roy Reid, age 92, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014. He was born January 22, 1922 in Birmingham, Alabama, Jefferson County the son of the late Mr. Albert Dennis Reid and the late Mrs. Tilia Ava Huff Reid. He entered the United States Navy in 1940 right before World War II. His first tour of duty was on the USS TEXAS to patrol submarine infested waters of the North Atlantic. He served on the USS TERROR in the North African Theatre of War laying mine fields around Casablanca. He was Chief Petty Officer on USS VELOCITY throughout the South Pacific, stationed off shore when they raised the US Flag on Iwo Jima. He was on duty in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese signed the Surrender.In 1946-47, he was part of the expedition of Admiral Byrd to the South Pole to map and charter previously unmarked shore lines and terrains. During the Korean Conflict, he was involved in Amphibious Landings on Inchon and Passau. He received in Commission and Commanded the Radar Picket Ship, USS Tracer from 1961-1964, which was awarded the Battle Efficiency E Award, and The Ney Award for having the best Organized Mess Afoat out of 1100 ships competing in the entire navy. He served as Executive Officer of the USS Navel Home in Philadelphia and two year duty at the Navel Conservatory in Washington, D.C. He retired from the US Navy in 1970 after serving 30 years and 3 wars. After retiring at the age of 48, MR Reid began work in November 1971 for the Department of Offender Rehabilitation in Jackson, GA as Inmate Classification Supervisor. He also served as President of Swan Lake Corp in Stockbridge, GA. and Chairman of Democratic Party for Henry County for 10 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Roy Reid. He is survived by his wife, Wilda Ann Eberhart Reid of Douglasville; daughter-in-law, Sandy Reid of Pace, FL; brothers, Ralph Burnell Reid of Birmingham, Otis Winfred Reid of Birmingham, Lester Eugene Reid of Birmingham; three grandchildren, Sonny and Angel Reid of Pensacola, FL, Sean and Jenene Reid of Pace, FL, Ryan and Crystal Reid of Cataula, GA; three stepsons, James and Donna Deaton, Brian Deaton and John Deaton all of Douglasville; step grandchildren, Stephanie and Josh Lipscomb and Brandon and Jennifer Deaton; nine great-grandchildren; one great- great grandchild; one sister-in-law, Jeanie Reid of Canton, GA; two nephews, Randy Reid and Bryan Reid of Canton, GA. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville Friday, August 1, 2014 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, August 2, 2014 from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home at 1:00 PM with Dr. John Pennington and Chaplain Danny West officiating.
