Mrs. Laura Anice Harris Swofford, 91, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, after several years of declining health. A resident of Douglas County for over sixty years, Mrs. Swofford was born in Lamar County, Georgia to Henry Chester and Leona Gillespie Harris. She graduated from Zebulon High School, Pike Co., took business classes under the National Youth Administration and attended Marsh Business College in Atlanta. She graduated from Hoke Smith Technical Institute and attended West Georgia College. Employed by the Veteranâs Administration in Atlanta, she worked until age 70. March 4, 1945, she married John Columbus Swofford of Douglasville, Georgia. They celebrated their fiftieth anniversary before he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were here parents and her brother, Hilton Harris, as well as a son, William Edgar âBillyâ Swofford and her grandson Jeffery Scott Swofford. Surviving her are eight children: John Swofford, Carmichael, CA; Janna Gedda, Washougal, WA; Marcia Otwell and husband, Rodney, High Point, NC; Dan Swofford, Douglasville; Pamela Word, Dallas; Philip Swofford and wife Cindy, Douglasville; Phillis Rizk and husband, Jimmy, Austell; and Harris Swofford, Douglasville; as well as 21 grandchildren, over 30 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter. Also surviving are her sister, Beverlyn Stewart of Fayetteville, GA, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Swofford professed faith in Christ at age 16. Upon moving to Douglas County, she joined Beulah Baptist Church where she was a faithful, active member for over 55 years until declining health limited her activities. She was instrumental in the reactivation, and a charter member of United Daughters of the Confederacy Douglasville Chapter 1346. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville, Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Wayne Bray, Rev. Terry Pearman, and Dr. Rodney Otwell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Douglasville.
