Annie Ruth Mathis, 83, of Temple, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. She was born on March 2, 1942, the daughter of the late John Boyd McElroy, Sr. and Barbara Williams McElroy.

She was a strong-spirited, loving, and devoted Christian woman whose legacy will be etched in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege to know her.

She was born and raised in Temple. Annie always had a welcoming nature and unmatched hospitality that made everyone feel at home. She had a gift for making others feel valued and cherished. Annie had a steadfast dedication to caregiving, and throughout her life, she took care of countless children. Her nurturing heart provided comfort and support to all who were fortunate to be under her watchful eye. She saw each child as a treasure deserving of love, attention, and opportunity. She always provided them with warmth and compassion.

Annie’s unwavering faith shaped her every action. She was a pillar of strength for her family and friends. Her love for God and her community was evident in everything she did, as she demonstrated what it meant to be a true servant of love.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Benjamin Mathis; sisters, Ilene McElroy Rhodes, Inez Johnson, Geneva Peavy, and Erma June McElroy; brother, Frank (Cotton) McElroy; step-son, Harold Mathis.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Melissa Mathis, daughter, Nancy Crawford all of Temple; grandchildren, Jessica and Dwight Lawhorn of Temple, Benjamin and Alex Wilczynski-Mathis of Florida, Katie Crawford of Temple, Christopher and Cati Barber of Bremen, Bryce and Madi Mathis of Temple, Rick Mathis, and Teresa Rickett; great-grandchildren, Dayson Lewis, Conner Barber, Greyson Smith, Ali Jai Cox, Willow Davenport; brother, John Boyd McElroy, Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 15, 2026 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Villa Rica Chapel with a funeral service at 6:00 PM.

As we remember the vibrant life of Annie Ruth Mathis, let us celebrate the kind-hearted woman who was a beacon of light to many. Her spirit lives on in the memories shared and the love she sowed in the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
