On April 30, 2020, Betty Meyer Perkins, much loved mother of five children, passed away at the age of 79.
Betty was born on April 3, 1941 in Alliance, Ohio, to David and Marie (Zeisler) Meyer. She was the youngest child and had two older brothers, David Meyer and Frank Meyer. She spent her high school years and young adult life in Memphis, Tennessee. She briefly attended Memphis State University but married young and began her lifelong dream of becoming a mom. Her oldest child was a son, David and quickly joining the young family were daughters, Ann Marie and Mary Kathryn. Daughter, Leza was born soon after and completing the family was daughter, Brooke.
Betty retired from the Boy Scouts of America in Irving, Texas in 2006. Her father was a long-time executive with the Boy Scouts and Betty supported the organization throughout her life. She enjoyed attending Philmont Scout Camp during the summers and helping in any capacity needed – even if directing cars in the parking lot.
But most of all Betty relished her role as a mom and matriarch of her large family. In addition to her five children, Betty was a grandmother of thirteen and great-grandmother of six. She enjoyed many days supporting extra-curricular activities of her children and grandchildren – from band, to cheerleading, to football, to soccer. Rain or shine, she was a loud supporter in the stands and could often be heard on the field.
Cancer took Betty too soon for those of us on this side of heaven but Betty won the battle. During her long fight, she never asked "why me" but thought "why not me" and lived every day selfless to the end.
Betty is survived by her children, David Legene (Pamela) Perkins of Fort Worth, Texas, Ann Marie (Sonny) Fite of Memphis, Tennessee, Mary Kathryn (Rick) Muse of The Colony, Texas, Leza (Al) Marioni of Munford, Tennessee and Brooke (Brad) Kendrick of Douglasville, Georgia; brothers, David (Chris) Meyer of Kentucky and Frank (Miriam) of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
According to Mrs. Perkins wishes, she was cremated.
