Billy Brannon Godfrey, 90, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026. He was born on March 6, 1936, the son of the late Frank Clark Godfrey and the late Ola Mae Nelson Godfrey
In 1955, Billy met a young girl named Camilla Nutt at his Uncle Ralph and Aunt Sue’s. He was home on leave from the military and she was visiting her best friend, Evelyn. He saw her and he was immediately smitten. He asked Evelyn if she would ask her friend “Camilla Kate Nutt Pie” if she would write to him. After many letters and dates, they married in 1956 and were hopelessly devoted to each other for the next 69 years. A love that most could only dream of.
Billy dedicated his life to his family, always placing them first in his heart. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marines, where he proudly served for four years, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His commitment to service was recognized with a national medal and a medal for good conduct, testifying to his disciplined and honorable character.
In his professional life, Billy founded Universal Equipment in Mableton, Georgia. Billy was known for his ability to tell a good story, captivating those around him with tales of both his personal adventures and his professional journey.
Billy’s passion extended beyond his work. He was an avid fisherman and a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain. He owned several deep-sea fishing boats, including Jacks-R-Wild, Tall Tales, and Moonraker, each representing the adventurous spirit that defined much of his life. He also built a deep-sea boat from the ground up and affectionately named it Sea Mist.
Billy had a remarkable talent for fixing things, whether they were household items or complex machinery. This skill exemplified his resourcefulness and desire to make the world around him better.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard “Ricky” Godfrey; brothers, George Godfrey and Robert “Bobby” Godfrey.
He is survived by his wife, Camilla Kate Godfrey; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sherry Godfrey of Hiram; sister and brother-in-law, Myra and Richard Kimmerling of Centre, Alabama; brother, Frank “Nick” Godfrey of Gadsden, Alabama; four grandchildren, Jessi, Jenny, Meghan and Bentley; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
