Charles Edward Cole, Sr.

Villa Rica

Charles Edward Cole, Sr.  of Villa Rica passed away, Wednesday, May 29, 2024. He was born December 14, 1929, the son of William Clifford Cole and Freddie Vernell Edge Cole. A lifetime resident of Villa Rica, Georgia, he graduated from Villa Rica High School in 1946 then attended West Georgia College and Georgia Tech. He was a member of the choir at West Georgia and played the trumpet in a musical ensemble. He sang tenor and was a soloist on many occasions in the West Georgia area.

Charles served in the army from January, 1951 to August, 1956. Following discharge, he studied agriculture under the Gl Bill. He was employed by Lockheed Aircraft Corp. until his father's death, at which time he assumed the family farm and worked as City Clerk for Villa Rica. Later, he worked for the US Postal Service, starting out as a part-time rural carrier, then held several positions until he was appointed Post Master for Villa Rica. He retired after 23 years. After retiring from USPS, he developed a sub-division on part of the family farm and built custom homes. Later, he worked for West Georgia National Bank, as a new-home construction inspector.

A lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Villa Rica, Charles was baptized there at age 14 and, in 1951, he and Yvonne Eaves were married there. They were active in the music program and were members of the sanctuary choir and Jubilee choir for many years. Charles was elected to the Board of Deacons at age 31, served as Church Treasurer and was appointed to many committees, including building projects. He was a member of the Unity Sunday School Class.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, his brother, W.C. Cole, Jr. and his nephew, David Cole. He is survived by Yvonne, his wife of 72 years; three children, Eddie (and his wife, Cindy), Richard and Beth; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; his niece, Pam Davidson, her two children and her five grand-children; and three special cousins, Bobby and Mary Cole and Nancy Spina of Illinois.

The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica on Sunday, June 2, 2024 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. The funeral will follow at 2:00 PM with Dr. Kevin Williams and Rev. Jeff Powell officiating. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Villa Rica.
