Christina Louise Gentry of Carrollton, GA died peacefully in her home of 40 years on March 19, 2025, of natural causes. She was born November 9, 1946, in Jesup, Georgia to Reverend Hilton and Nell Garrett. She was a 1964 graduate of Plattsburg High School in Missouri and began attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia later that same year. She returned to school at West Georgia College years later and finished her bachelor's degree in education. In her first teaching job with the Carrollton City Schools she taught seventh and eighth grade English and art and actually printed and processed photos for the yearbook in the darkroom within her classroom.
Louise was known by many names: Louise, Weezy, Weezer, Aunt Weezy, Aunt Louise, Grammy, Mrs. Gentry, Mama Lou, and of course, Mom. She was a one-of-a-kind mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, daughter, educator, and friend.
She shared lasting friendships with many in the Carrollton community and all over the country. She was an English teacher, an artist, a driving instructor, a biker (she owned a Harley once upon a time), and she was skilled on horseback. She was a free spirit and a dedicated parent. She loved all mediums of art but her first love was painting and seeing people appreciate her work. She enjoyed writing and reading. She loved catching up with friends and family like her sister Sally, her co-grandma Carol, and her niece Lindsey. For the friends she lost along the way to illness, age, and time she mourned openly. She was a great listener and sometimes lecturer. She could brandish a sharp wit and a spirited sense of humor. She exercised her senses. She expressed herself.
Louise was most proud of her children, Sherry and Garrett, and of her grandchildren, Audrey Johnson, Sophie Johnson, Athron Gentry, and Torryn Gentry. She loved them all “to the moon and back, big as the sky.”
We are heartbroken to say goodbye, but Louise is just starting her next adventure. She is surely up there somewhere, young and gorgeous with her good health restored, astride a galloping Thoroughbred, chasing her curiosity into the stars. And she will watch over all of us whom she loved so fiercely and completely.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings Hilton Garrett of Atlanta, Reena Garrett of Delaware, Tommy Garrett, and Ruth Crews both of Augusta and her children Sherry Miller Johnson of Carrollton, Garrett Gentry of Atlanta, and stepson Samuel Gentry of Carrollton. She loved her son-in-law Kash Johnson and her daughter-in-law Aubyn Stafford. Additionally, she is survived by her nieces and nephews: Will, Savannah, Wade, Mandy, Stephanie, Hunter, Erin, Kelley, Hilton, and Lindsey. She absolutely adored all the little ones and the love they returned to her. We are better humans because she loved us.
A celebration of Louise’s life, led by her dear friend and pastor Neil Awbrey, will be held at Glenloch Baptist Church in Franklin, GA on April 22, 2025, at 2:00pm. Bring your best memories!
