Emblem

Mr. Donald J Piel Jr., age 70, of Douglasville, Ga, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Donald (Donnie) was born on May 10, 1955, in Marietta, Georgia, to the late Donald J. Piel Sr. and Betty Catherine Boring Piel. He graduated from R.L. Osborne High School in 1973.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army, enlisting in May of 1973. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson and advanced training at Fort Gordon before serving with the 165th Military Police Company/197th Ordnance Battalion in Fischbach, West Germany. He was later assigned to the 709th Military Police Battalion at Gutleut Kaserne in Frankfurt. After his honorable discharge in 1976, he continued his service in the Georgia National Guard with the 190th/170th Military Police Battalion.

A lifelong advocate for leadership and character development, Donnie began his journey in Scouting in 1966 with Troop 771 at Green Acres Baptist Church. He earned the rank of Life Scout and remained involved with the Boy Scouts of America for decades, serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster, Den Leader, Troop Committee Member, and Scoutmaster. He was later honored with the title of Scoutmaster Emeritus.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan Piel of Douglasville, GA; his children, twins, Andrea (Jonathan) Carver of Talking Rock, GA, and Andrew Donald (Candice) Piel of Winston, GA. He leaves behind a legacy of love and honor in his three grandchildren: Clint Carver, Kadence Piel, and Lily Carver. He is also survived by his sister, Debra Robbins, and his brother, Daryl Piel, along with several nieces and nephews.

A proud veteran, devoted family man, and Christian, Donnie was a longtime member of Sunset Hills Baptist Church. He accepted Jesus Christ in his heart as his personal Savior while in high school attending Sharon Baptist Church in Smyrna, Georgia. A decision that shaped the rest of his life. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
