Douglas Howell Ivester, 75, passed away on August 10, 2024, in Douglasville, Georgia. Born on December 4, 1948, in the charming city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was the beloved son of the late Howell V. Ivester and the late Mildred Bledsoe Ivester.

Doug lived a life marked by compassion, dedication and a deep sense of purpose. A longtime resident of Dalton, Georgia, he devoted more than two decades to serving people with disabilities, focusing on career development and support. As a proud Navy Veteran, Doug embodied the values of service and honor, which extended well beyond his military career. His commitment to his community was evident through his active involvement with The American Legion Post 112 and the Kiwanis Club of Dalton, where he was once named ‘Man of the Year’ in recognition of his contributions.

An alumnus of Dalton State College, Doug combined his education with his natural kindness, calmness, patience and selflessness. Known for his gentle nature and willingness to help others, Doug made a lasting impact on everyone he met. Outside of his professional life, he found joy in playing tennis, teeing off at the golf course and passionately cheering for UGA football.

One of Doug’s proudest moments was being selected as a torchbearer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, an honor he excitingly shared with the legendary Muhammad Ali. His dedication to inclusivity was also evident in his role as an organizer and volunteer for the Special Olympics, where he tirelessly advocated for the rights of all individuals.

Above all, Doug cherished his family. He was a devoted and caring husband, father and grandfather who treasured every moment with those closest to him. A gracious host, Doug had a gift for making friends and family feel welcome and loved. The memories he leaves behind reflect the deep affection he held for his loved ones.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of over 36 years, Jo Ivester; his sons, Derek (Katie) Ivester and Aren (Hannah) Ivester; his granddaughter, Ashlin Ivester; his sister, Donna Ivester; as well as extended family and dear friends.
