Dr. Verline D. Dennis, age 83, of Douglas County, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020. She was born December 18, 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of the late Clifton C. Dixon and the late Frieda Allen Dixon.
She graduated from West Fulton High School in 1954 and attended Emory University and Oglethorpe University to receive her undergraduate degree in Education. She received her Masters in Counseling from West Georgia College, her six year in Administration from West Georgia College, then later her Doctorate at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. Dennis taught at Douglas County's Eastside and Burnette Elementary Schools, was a counselor at Eastside Elementary and at Chestnut Log Middle School, then an assistant principal at Stewart Middle School and Chapel Hill Elementary. Dr. Dennis was an avid reader and loved her cats. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Society for Key Women Educators. She and her family attended Bethany Methodist Church in Grove Park, Bethany United Methodist Church in Smyrna and Midway United Methodist Church in Douglasville, where she was the organist at all three churches.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George D. (Dave) Dennis and son, George Dean Dennis.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gail Dennis of Douglasville and daughter, Deanna Dennis of Atlanta; grandchildren, Ryne Dennis of Athens, Kelley and Jamie Thomas of Burlington, North Carolina and great-grandchild, Penelope Thomas of Burlington, North Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Lamar Chatham of Powder Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral home of Douglasville on Friday, February 21, 2020 from 11:00AM until 1:00PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, February 21, 2020 at 1:00PM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn, Douglasville with Dr. Sam Newman and Reverend Ken Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Douglasville.
