Dudley Mather Payne, 83, of Douglasville, GA passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025. He was born on September 5, 1941, the son of the late Robert G Payne and the late Emma Lee Norwood Payne.
Dudley lived a life rich in laughter, compassion, and a deep love for both family and his farm.
As a member of the 82nd Airborne in the US Army, Dudley displayed an unwavering commitment to service and a camaraderie with his fellow soldiers that would remain a hallmark of his character throughout his life. After his military service, he enjoyed a successful career in banking, where his personable nature and sharp sense of humor won the hearts of many. He was a very funny man who never met a stranger, making connections wherever he went.
Dudley’s true passion, however, lay in the simplicity of farm life. He cherished his time spent caring for the farm, particularly reveling in the company of his horses and the enjoyment that came with using his tractors on the farm. He was devoted to rescuing animals, embodying a kindness that extended beyond his own home. Dudley loved having the family over, sharing meals, laughter, and the joy that only the countryside can bring.
His interests included a diverse collection of items, reflecting his unique personality and the many facets of his life. Among his favorite pastimes were watching westerns and enjoying the classic films of John Wayne, as well as episodes of Gunsmoke, which sparked joy and nostalgia in his heart.
Dudley’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his humor, generosity, and unwavering spirit. He leaves behind a cherished memory in the hearts of his family and friends, remembering him not just as a banker or a veteran, but as a truly remarkable man who embraced all aspects of life with gratitude and joy.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Joann Brewer.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Payne; daughters, Deana (Scott) Oxford of Winston, GA and Kendra Railey of Douglasville, GA; sons, Randall Payne of Wilmington, NC and Kevin Payne of Wilmington, NC; five grandchildren, Dylan, Maegan, Tanna, Brody, and Emory; one great grandchild, Tate and one nephew.
The family is planning a private ceremony to celebrate Dudley’s life.
