Earl Conway Cosgrove of the Beulah Community, Paulding County, GA, formerly of Douglasville, GA and Metairie, LA died Saturday, October 27, 2018, following a short illness. He was born in New Orleans, LA on September 28, 1933 to the late Francis Milton Cosgrove, Sr. and the late Jane Frances Long Cosgrove. Earl was also predeceased by three of his siblings: brothers, Rev. Francis M. Cosgrove, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO and Charles (Larry) Cosgrove of Marrero, LA and sister, Dorothy Fosbury of Austin, TX.He is survived by his sweet wife of nine years, Betty Jane Scarbro-Cosgrove; three daughters, Didi Cosgrove(Tim) Hopper of Loganville, GA, Darci Cosgrove (Mike Bryan) of Chandler, AZ and Dori Cosgrove Gurganus of Decatur, GA; three sisters, Marguerite Swoveland of Virginia Beach, VA, Carol Ordes of Covington, LA and Evelyn Robert of Gulfport, MS; four grandchildren, Gillian Gurganus, Nick Cosgrove Gurganus, Brendyn Cosgrove Bryan and Liam Cosgrove Bryan; many nieces and nephews; Also five step-children, Michael (Christie)Scarbro, Dean (Laurie) Scarbro, Darrell (Tamara) Scarbro, Rodney (Karmen) Scarbro, Betty Jean Brown (Michael) and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including newborn Lucas Bryan of Tempe, AZ.Mr. Cosgrove was a 1951 graduate of Metairie High School in Louisiana. He graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from LSU in 1958 and a Masterâs in Civil Engineering from GA Tech in 1971. Earl enlisted in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict in 1953 and served an 18-month tour of duty there. He earned two ribbons, ultimately achieving the rank of Major before retiring from the USMC Reserve after 27 years in 1980. His 33 year career with the US Army Corps of Engineers took him from New Orleans to Charleston, SC and finally Atlanta, where he retired in 1989. Earl was a substitute math teacher in Douglas County public schools after retirement. He was also a Douglasville City Councilman from 1996-1999 and volunteered countless hours to charitable and service organizations, including Chairman of the Douglasville-Douglas County SERTOMA. He attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church (Dallas, GA) and previously St. Theresa Catholic Church (Douglasville, GA). He was also Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Sweetwater Council 10821 in Douglasville, GA from 2003-2004 and transferred to the Dallas, GA Council 12285, where he was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Mother Teresa Assembly. More recently, he was a member of New Georgia Baptist Church, Villa Rica, where he enjoyed working in their Care Closet. He was president of the Victory Sunday School class and past vice-president of Lite and Lively. Earl was an active member of Master Gardeners of Douglas and Paulding Counties and also a founding member of the West Georgia Beekeepers Association, Inc.The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica, Friday, November 2, 2018 from 5:00PM until 8:00PM. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 3, 2018 2t 4:00PM at New Georgia Baptist Church, 6092 Mulberry Rock Road, Villa Rica, GA with Pastor Keith Stell officiating.
