Frank D. Nelms passed away on March 19, 2025, at the age of 98. He was born in Atlanta on October 25, 1926, the youngest of 7 children of Lamar M. Nelms and Maude Hall Nelms.
He graduated from Boys High in 1944, and as part of the Greatest Generation, he enlisted in the US Navy in late 1944. Frank served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and was in Tokyo Bay on the day Japan surrendered.
Returning home after discharge from the Navy, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1949. He was a proud Bulldog from then on, never missing a football game in person or on TV for the rest of his life.
After college he joined the Auto-Soler Company, an Atlanta based manufacturing company, later acquired by Textron. Over his 30 plus year career there he served in many roles including sales manager, export manager, corporate secretary and counsel, and director. While working his day job and raising a family, he found time to attend Woodrow Wilson College of Law. He passed the bar but never was a practicing lawyer.
After retiring from Auto-Soler/Textron, he started a new career with the Internal Revenue Service and worked there for 9 years before retiring for good. In retirement, he and his beloved wife Nan traveled to many places in the US and outside the US.
In his later years, Frank was an avid golfer into his 80s. In his last few years, he was a faithful member of Austell Presbyterian Church and cherished his twice weekly poker games with his "poker group".
Frank was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Nan Lipscomb Nelms. He is survived by his three children F. Donald Nelms, Jr (Janet), Nancy Nelms Davis (Joe), and Susan Nelms Montecalvo (Dennis). He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren to whom he was known as "Pop".
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 2 PM at Austell Presbyterian Church, 5895 Love St., Austell, GA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Austell Presbyterian Church. Nelms, Frank Donald.
