Geneva B. Wehrel

December 30, 1909 — January 31, 2011

Mrs. Geneva B. Wehrel, age 101, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Monday, January 31, 2011 at Southwest Christian Hospice in Union City. She was born December 30, 1909 in Bloomfield, Indiana, the daughter of the late Mr. Everett Workman and the late Mrs. Mary Axe Workman. She was raised on a farm with her one brother Bud Workman who was seven years younger to the day. As a young girl, she saw her first automobile come riding up to the country store belonging to her Uncle Deck who got out wearing a leather hat that buckled under his chin and goggles. He was driving a roadster. Her family only had horses and wagons at that time. After high school Jenny went to Indianapolis and entered Business College. After graduating, she began her first and only job with John Hancock Insurance Agency, where she worked up from Mail Clerk to Office Manager. She married Frank C. Wehrel in 1935, and remained happily married until his death in 1979. She kept working for the agency part time until the early 80s. Her biggest hobbies were square dancing, bowling, gardening, and playing cards. In 1993 Jenny moved to Douglas Manor Town Homes in Douglasville, Georgia, to be near her brother Bud and Augusta Workman, her niece, Carolyn and Ted Westbrook, and her great-niece Missy Westbrook. She lost her brother in 2002. Then in 2007, Carolyn and Ted moved in with her in Douglas Manor, and she gave up driving her Buick Century at the age of 98. Jenny or Aunt Jenny, as she was known to friends, has traveled to many, many foreign countries and has visited all the continents, most oceans, and seas. She was a member of Bright Star United Methodist Church, and the Douglasville Hilltoppers. She loved attending Church, playing SkipBo, and going to Florida for three months each fall with Carolyn and Ted. She had a favorite singer in Panama City who announced "Aunt Jenny is in the House" when she arrived. Douglasville Mayor Mickey Thompson named January 5, 2010, Geneva Wehrel Day, in her honor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Wehrel; and brother, Bud Workman. She is survived by her niece, Carolyn Westbrook and her husband, Ted Westbrook of Douglasville; great-niece, Melissa Westbrook of Newnan; and sister-in-law, Augusta Workman of Sandy Springs. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, February 4, 2011 at 4:00 PM at Bright Star United Methodist Church in Douglasville with Dr. Thom Shores officiating. The family will receive friends at Bright Star United Methodist Church on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM. Interment will follow at a later date at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN. Messages of condolence to the family may be sent from www.jones-wynn.com.
