Gloria Sue Wood Mitchell, known affectionately as “Mrs. Glo”, age 82, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home on September 17, 2024. She was born on May 30, 1942, in Macon, Georgia, to the late Mr. Harris Waters Wood and the late Mrs. Virginia Lula Rainwater Wood.
Gloria lived a life rich with love, laughter, and service to others. For ten years, Gloria dedicated herself to caring for seniors. Her role as a caregiver was an embodiment of her values and a reflection of her compassionate spirit. Gloria never met a stranger; her warm heart and good listening skills allowed her to connect with everyone she encountered. Her pro-women stance shone through in her everyday actions, as she encouraged women around her to embrace their strengths.
Gloria was known for her vibrant personality, characterized by her great sense of humor, intelligence, and social nature. As a true southern lady, she embraced the virtues of family and hospitality, building a nurturing home. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, shaping her compassionate interactions with others. As an accomplished homemaker, Gloria enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She was skilled in crochet, painting, quilting, and poetry, and she found immense joy in singing and playing the piano. Her love for literature was profound, particularly her passion for reading the Bible, which grounded her and provided her with inspiration throughout her life.
Gloria's proudest accomplishments centered around her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were the joy and light of her life. She cherished each moment spent with them.
In addition to her parents, Gloria is preceded in death by her son, Andrew Lawrence Mitchell; brother, Gene Wood and his wife, Rita; Sisters, Eleanor Wood and Judy Reasor.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mr. Jerald Franklin Mitchell; sons, Scott (Shelly) Mitchell, Charles (Denise) Barrett; daughter, Donna (Don) Vinyard; grandchildren, Cameron (Stephanie) Mitchell, Cailin Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Liliana Grace Mitchell, Ledger Scott Mitchell; sister, Virginia (Robert) Oakes; nieces and nephews, Hunter Oakes, Shylin Oakes, Renee Wood Case, Judy Wood, Claudia Wood; paternal brother, Lee Wood; paternal sister, Debbie Wood; as well as extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 20, 2024 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville. The memorial service will start at 2:00 PM with Scott Mitchell officiating.
