Gregory Michael Christenson, known affectionately to many as “Greggo,” passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, in Douglasville, Georgia. He was born on December 10, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the late Ralph E. Christenson and Delpha Asay Christenson.
He lived a life marked by deep dedication to science, family, and a lifelong love of nature. Gregory’s distinguished career in public health and medical research reflected his unwavering commitment to advancing the understanding and treatment of cancer. He earned a PhD in Biostatistics, along with degrees in Psychology and Philosophy, reflecting both his wide-ranging intellect and enduring passion for learning. Throughout his professional career, Gregory shared his expertise as a teacher and researcher while serving at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute, where he worked alongside respected leaders in medicine and public health, including Dr. Anthony Fauci. His exceptional contributions established him as one of the nation’s leading population-based public health researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he ultimately retired as Director of Health Sciences.
A proud veteran, Gregory served honorably in the United States Air Force in Vietnam and later attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service. His service reflected the same discipline, integrity, and commitment he brought to every aspect of his life.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gregory was a true Renaissance man. Gregarious, thoughtful, and endlessly curious, he loved reading, spirited conversation, and lifelong learning. His wife fondly described him as a “hippie,” a reflection of his compassionate, free-spirited nature. He was also a devoted animal lover who found great joy in raising animals and caring for his land, proudly considering himself a farmer above all else. Following his retirement, Gregory found deep fulfillment in family life and the community he called home. He formed many meaningful friendships and was known for his warmth, curiosity, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Among Gregory’s greatest personal triumphs was his extraordinary courage and resilience as a cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, he fought the disease for 23 years while participating in numerous clinical trials that helped advance treatment for others facing the same illness. His perseverance and willingness to contribute to research became both an inspiration and an extension of his life’s work.
Gregory is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Connie Carmack Christenson; his brother, Brad (Tara) Christenson; his sister, Leslie (Brad) Campbell; his nephews, Michael Middlemas and Matthew Campbell; his nieces, Lindsey Westbrook, Madisen Tan, and Cabri Christenson; along with extended family members and many dear friends.
