Herman McElhannon

Mr. Herman Clay McElhannon, age 85, of Temple, Georgia passed away Monday, December 26, 2011 at Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica, Georgia. He was born March 28, 1926 in Oconee County, Georgia, the son of the late Mr. Herman William McElhannon and the late Mrs. Myra Laura Whitehead McElhannon. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Vicksburg and USS LST 679, where he served in Japan and the Philippines. Mr. McElhannon worked as an assembler at Square D Electric Company, in Atlanta, GA. He was talented with his hands and enjoyed building his own home and refinishing furniture. He was an avid gardener specializing in growing sweet potatoes and popcorn. He was devoted to his family and especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and playing in the swimming pool. He was a member of Berachah Baptist Church in Temple. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Annie Bell Crisp and Sudie Mae Casper; and brother, Bill McElhannon, Omer McElhannon, E.C. McElhannon and Artis McElhannon. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlie Mae Roberts McElhannon of Temple; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Bill Allen of Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kayla McElhannon of Temple; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Candie and John Dewberry, Doug and Malissa Allen, Dana and Trey Kiess, Daniel and Leah Allen, Brandi and Christopher Morgan, Clay and Noel McElhannon, and JoDan and Mary McElhannon; fourteen great-grandchildren, Shane and Marlana Harmon, Zachary Allen, Matthew Allen, Lacey Allen, Naomi Kiess, Wyatt Kiess, Kayla Gann, Alexia Brown, Tucker Morgan, Billy Allen, Emily Dewberry, Haley McElhannon, Kolton McElhannon, and Tyler McElhannon; one great-great grandchild, Braylen Harmon; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 27, 2011, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 1:00PM at Berachah Baptist Church, 2043 N. Hwy 113, Temple, Georgia with Pastor Jamie Rollins officiating. Mr. McElhannon will lie in state at the church from 12 Noon until 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Melrose Hills Memorial Park in Villa Rica with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.jones-wynn.com.
