Hugh Murphey

Mr. Hugh Eugene “Gene” “Cotton” Murphey, 79, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Monday, February 26, 2018. He was born January 19, 1939 in Cobb County, Georgia, the son of the late Mr. Eugene Paul Murphey and the late Mrs. Julie Ruth Souter Murphey. He was a retired Builder and a member of Shepherd of the Hills Methodist Church. A fun-loving man, he enjoyed life and cutting up with everyone. His favorite pastimes were gardening, woodworking, and puzzles. He was an avid fan of NASCAR. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Smith and a brother, Edward Hudson Murphey. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy LaRue Whitfield Murphey of Douglasville; three children and their spouses, Wesley Eugene and Teresa Murphey of Douglasville, Jeffrey Scott Murphey Sr. and his wife, Deborah of Bowdon and Lisa Strickland-Sosebee and her husband, Scott of Douglasville; two sisters, Katie A. Smith and Barbara J. Cox both of Powder Springs; a brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence Lee and Linda Murphey of Stockbridge; five grandchildren and their spouses, Amber and Stan Reaves of Winston, Scott and Diane Murphey of Cordova, AL, Dylan Strickland of Douglasville, Hannah Strickland of Douglasville, and Lee Sosebee of Douglasville; six great-grandchildren, Stanley Reaves, IV, Ady Reaves, Samson Reaves, Reice Murphey, Barrett Murphey, and Piper Jane Murphey; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville, Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
