James Andrew Phagan

Mr. James Andrew “Whitey” Phagan, 86, of Maple Street, Villa Rica, Georgia passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Georgia. He was born September 11, 1920 in Forsyth County, Georgia, the son of the late Mr. James Robert Phagan and the late Mrs. Tessie Dover Phagan. Mr. Phagan grew up on a farm and was the oldest of 12 children. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II. Mr. Phagan worked as a fabrication welder at a shipyard in Brunswick, Georgia, Cannon Casket Company, Lockheed and retired from Southwire. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Villa Rica, PCA, where he was a deacon and later became an elder. He was a Emeritus member of the Villa Rica Masonic Lodge #72 F&AM. In addition to his parents, Mr. Phagan was preceded in death by his brothers, Winfred Phagan, Bobby Phagan, Donald Phagan, Marvin Phagan and Morris Phagan. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Margie Elizabeth Overby Phagan of Villa Rica; his daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Dale Sumner of Temple, Delane Phagan of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Dewana and Randy Boyd of Villa Rica and Darla and Kyle Tanner of Rockmart; his sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary Phagan of Dalton and Daniel Phagan of Carrollton; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Loye Webb of Douglasville, Joann Fox of Austell and Jimmie Nell Phagan of Enigma; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Gladstone and Ruth Phagan of Arkansas and Wayne and Teresa Phagan of Brookfield; 9 grandchildren, Jimmy Sumner, Dana Land, Joseph Phagan, Angie Phagan, Stephen Boyd, Jonathan Boyd, Neta Boatright, Hunter Tanner and Kyla Tanner; 8 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at 1:00 PM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica, Georgia with Rev. Todd Allen officiating. Musical selections will be provided by Betty Tumlin. Serving as pallbearers will be Joseph Phagan, Stephen Boyd, Jonathan Boyd, Jimmy Sumner, Ron Moore, Stephen Moore, David Moore and Mitch Land. Interment will follow in Melrose Hills Memorial Park in Villa Rica, Georgia.
