James Thomas Baker

James (Jim) Thomas Baker, 85, of Douglasville, GA, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2025. He was born on March 3, 1940, the son of the late Lenoyx Purnell Baker and the late Flora Whitmire Baker.

Jim dedicated his life to public service and touched the lives of many through his various roles in the community.

A man of many interests and talents, Jim also supported a field agent for the FBI. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his steadfast dedication to his values and the positive impact he had on those around him.

A proud veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy as a chemist on the USS Skipjack, a nuclear submarine, where he showcased his commitment to duty and excellence. After his service, he returned to Douglas County and embarked on a notable career that spanned over two decades.

Jim was a respected real estate broker, owning and operating Jim Baker and Associates for many years. His knowledge and expertise in real estate endeared him to clients and colleagues alike, further solidifying his reputation as a trusted advisor in the community.

Following his real estate career Jim became a Magistrate Judge and later a Probate Judge for the Probate Court of Douglas County. Jim exemplified integrity and fairness, always striving to ensure justice for all who came before him.

In addition to his work in the judiciary, Jim was passionate about youth development and community service. He was a longtime supporter of the Boy Scouts, having proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout himself. His contributions extended to serving on the Boy Scout board, where he inspired countless young minds with his leadership and dedication.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of service, honor, and community involvement that will not soon be forgotten. His life was a testament to the rewarding power of public service, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jim was a member of Sunset Hills Baptist Church for fifty-four years and held various roles in teaching Sunday School and as a deacon.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Kay Taylor; sister, Virginia Dobson and brothers, Robert Baker and Lenoyx Baker.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Elsie Harris Baker; and daughter, Angela (Steve) Green of Douglasville, GA; Son-in-law, Stacy Taylor of Texas; two grandchildren, James Zachary Green and Colton Thomas Edward Taylor; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 22, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel. The family will also receive friends and family prior to the funeral service on Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ephesus Baptist Church, Villa Rica, GA.

The funeral services will be conducted at Ephesus Baptist Church of Villa Rica, GA on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 11:00 AM.

Interment will follow at Sunrise Gardens of Memories, 11261 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Douglasville, GA 30134.
