Mr. James Richard Smallwood, age 85, of Villa Rica, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2019. He was born May 30, 1934 in Villa Rica, the son of the late Mr. James Jimmy Esker Smallwood and the late Mrs. Lorene Deal Smallwood. He was a Member of the Bremen Church of Christ. Mr. Smallwood graduated from Villa Rica High School in 1952. During high school, he worked as a soda jerk at Berrys Pharmacy. At the age of 18, he joined the Active Reserves at Chambley Naval Air Station. Mr. Smallwood then enlisted in the United States Navy on October 26, 1952, as a Naval Photographer and was sent to boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland. While on active duty, he photographed the christening of the Nautilus Submarine, the first nuclear submarine, and he filmed the public display of the U505 Submarine, which was captured by the United States during World War II. While home on leave, Mr. Smallwood met and fell in love with Shirley Ann White of Temple. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy on August 20, 1954, and married Shirley on May 4, 1956. They were married for 62 years. In 1956 he went to Radiology Technology School at Georgia Baptist Hospital and in 1957, he began his career at Villa Rica City Hospital and Villa Rica Medical Clinic. After a combined 50 years as a Radiologist Tech, CT Tech and Nuclear Medicine Tech in Villa Rica, Bremen and Dallas, Mr. Smallwood retired in 2006 from Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann White Smallwood; son, Philip Richard Smallwood; two brothers, Donald Smallwood and Bobby Smallwood; and sister, Carolyn Weaver. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Keith Harris of Jonesboro; son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Kelli Smallwood of Villa Rica; sister, Marie Cole of Temple; brother, David Smallwood of Villa Rica; grandchildren, Amber Smallwood and Wayne Korbl of Carrollton, Ashley and Tom Jennings of Louisville, KY, Ansley and Brad Willis of Fayetteville, Allison and Scott Carter of Brookhaven, Logan Smallwood of Villa Rica and Brady Smallwood of Villa Rica; great grandchildren, Kevin Korbl, Dalton Jennings, Eden Jennings, Knox Willis, Everly Willis, Harris Carter and Jackson Carter. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica, Saturday, August 10, 2019, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
