James Swofford

Sgt. (Retired) James Lovie Swofford, age 68, of Winston, Georgia passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born June 14, 1944 in Villa Rica, Georgia the son of the late Mr. James Harold Swofford and the late Mrs. Tressie Verdell Camp Swofford. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Silver Star & Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960 and the Sharpshooter (M-16 Rifle) Medal. He worked as a mechanic. He was a devoted member of Midway Macedonia Baptist Church in Villa Rica. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Luther Gerald Swofford. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Shirley Duty Swofford of Winston; four daughters and their spouses, Phyllis Jeannette and L.T. Thibodeaux of Dougalsville, Debbie Lynn and Tim Haynes of Douglasville, Janice Denise Swofford of Winston, and Michelle Dawn Swofford and Billy Rinks of Winston; two sons and their spouses, James Darren and Cindy Swofford of Bremen and Michael Shane and Colleen Swofford of Douglasville; two sisters, Linda Noles of Heard County and Carolyn Key of Monticello; brother, Ronald Swofford of Newnan; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglas Chapel Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 1:00 PM until 9:00 PM and Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday, March 25, 2013 at 3:00 PM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville with Pastor Todd Wright and Pastor Freddie Blalock officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Douglasville with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.jones-wynn.com.
