Joanne Celeste Gardner

Dec 10, 1928 — Aug 16, 2026

Douglasville, Georgia

Joanne Celeste Gardner, better known as "Maga," was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, servant, and friend. She passed away peacefully at her home - Benton House of Douglasville - on August 16, 2026, in Douglasville, Georgia, at the age of 97. She was born on December 10, 1928, in Huntington, Indiana to the late Marie Scher Landrigan and Thomas J. Landrigan. Joanne’s life was a remarkable testament of faith, kindness, and service.

From her earliest days in Indiana, Joanne’s spirit shone brightly. She was crowned homecoming queen of her high school, embodying the warmth and grace that would define her life. After graduating, she worked for Service Electric Company in Indiana, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence that she exhibited throughout her life. In addition to her strong work ethic, she was a fierce competitor who loved playing games and spent many evenings cheering on the Atlanta Braves and watching Wheel of Fortune.

Joanne’s devotion to her faith was the cornerstone of her existence. She loved Jesus Christ with all her heart and lived that love through daily acts of prayer and compassion. As a prayer warrior, she steadfastly prayed for her family, friends, and nation every day—her devotion was unwavering through every season of life.

Her marriage was a beautiful partnership, one that took her around the globe as she traveled with her husband during his military service. Joanne lived in India, Germany, and Japan, embracing each new culture and experience with an open heart. No matter where life took her, her role as a devoted wife and mother remained her proudest calling.

Joanne’s capacity to give extended far beyond her family. For over 35 years, she volunteered with the Douglasville Pregnancy Resource Center, earning a place in their Hall of Fame. Her gentle wisdom guided countless women in their moments of need. At the Douglas County Jail, Joanne ministered for more than 20 years, offering hope to those seeking redemption. She was a guiding light in nursing homes for over 50 years, bringing comfort, joy, and companionship to many. She also gave counsel and hope as a prayer counselor for the 700 Club crisis hotline, never failing to extend a listening ear and an empathetic heart.

Her service and leadership were recognized not only locally but at the state and national level. Joanne was recognized with the "Volunteer of the Year" award by the State of Georgia, and also honored for her contributions by former President George W. Bush. She was the proud recipient of the "Good Neighbor Award" from the Kroger Company, a reflection of her efforts to build community and care for others.

As a long-standing member of both Water of Life Christian Center and West Metro Church of God, Joanne enriched her churches as a Sunday School teacher and mentor. Towards the twilight of her life, she led Bible studies at the Benton House, continuing to inspire others through Scripture and prayer.

Joanne’s legacy is one of steadfast faith, boundless compassion, and tireless service. She touched countless lives through her ministries and acts of kindness, always seeking to uplift those in need. Her prayers and love remain an enduring gift to all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of over 34 years, Lieutenant Colonel Jack Otto Gardner; her sons, Michael Gardner, Steven Gardner and Jack Otto Gardner, Jr.; as well as several brothers, sisters and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children; David (Arubra) Gardner of Wedowee, Alabama, Mary Ann (Mike) Mitchell of Panama City Beach, Florida, Kathy (Robin) Brown of Douglasville, Georgia, Dennis (Sandy) Gardner of Douglasville, Georgia, Patrick (Jeannie) Gardner of Waco, Georgia, Lorie (Randy) Bomar of Villa Rica, Georgia, Maggie (Russell) Roper of Douglasville, Georgia, Jimmy (Kristi) Gardner of Douglasville, Georgia, Jeffrey (Beth) Gardner of Douglasville, Georgia, Linda (J.R.)
