John Gossett

John W. Gossett 93 went home to be with his Heavenly Father on March 10, 2013 with his family by his side in Zephyrhills, FL where he had resided since 2005.John was born December 15, 1919 in Crawford, GA to John and Alma (Wilson) Gossett. John grew up and attended school in Union Point, GA while living with his half sister Evelyn (Paul) Bryant after his mothers’ death.John was both a WWII and Korean War Veteran. In 1940 he joined the US Army 29th Infantry Div. working in various positions around the world. John was a 1st Sgt (E8) in Dec of 1959. He later retired as a Master Sgt (B7) from the US Army in 1960 at his station in Fort Jackson, SC with an Honorable Discharge. John was awarded the Commendation Ribbon w/Metal Pendant (3rd Award); Expert Infantry Badge; and Good Conduct Medal (4th Award). After retirement he drove truck cross country for about a year, attended Barber College, cut hair for a short while and bought a bar and grill in Atlanta. He ran that for several years, sold it and went to work for the US Civil Service Commission. John was employed by the DSA, DCASR Atlanta working for the Army Air Force Exchange Service as a Quality Assurance Specialist with his Duty Station in Jackson, MS. He retired from this position in 1975. John loved life and lived it to the fullest. He married Fanchon (Jones) Johnston in August of 1970.They later moved to Douglasville, GA which he considered home. He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Senior Group there, holding the position of Tour Director, arranging bus tours to various events. He loved to Cruise and travel as much as possible with family and friends. John was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville. After moving to Zephyrhills he attended the First Presbyterian Church of Zephyrhills, stayed active in the Senior Clubs there and in Dade City, and joined the Red Hat Society of Dade City, which included men. John never had children but was a wonderful Uncle to many. John will forever be remembered by his devoted nephew, Gordon Wayne and wife Bobbie Fouche of Zephyrhills, FL and his niece Terri Walker (Bob Lucas) of Marietta, GA. John is survived by his great nephew Gordon “Billy” Fouche, great niece Sandy (Paul) Webb, several great nieces and nephews, along with extended family members who loved and cherished him. John was preceded in death by his younger sister, Louise (Gossett) Walker in October of 1992 and the love of his life, his wife Fanchon “Fran” (Jones) Gossett in March of 1994. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, March 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with Rev. Sandy Fox officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehaven Cemetery with Full Military Honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.jones-wynn.com.
