Mr. John Garland Yates, 89, a 31-year resident of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016. He was born September 4, 1927 in Aily, Virginia, the son of the late Mr. Johnathan Garland Yates and the late Mrs. Crissie Alafair Counts Yates. He was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force having served over 26 years. He was a farmer and he retired as a school bus driver. He enjoyed the study of Meteorology. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, June Rose, Stella May, and Nannie Lou Yates; brothers, Ola, Garmon, Joseph, Wilson, Henry Grady, and Clint Gene Yates; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Brady and Molly Owens; and 3 grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Rita Owens Yates of Douglasville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnathan and Amanda Yates of Kennesaw, David and Susan Yates of Carrollton, and Johnny Yates of Cayman Islands; six daughters and sons-in-law, Kerry McTaggart of Marietta, Jeanie Lovinggood, of Cayman Islands, Mary M. Yates of Cayman Islands, Peggy and David Anders of Austin, TX, Patricia Compton of Abington, VA, and Cheryl and Brian Jarrel of Nippa, KY; one sister, Dimple Yates of Pennsylvania; three brothers and sister-in-law, Charles and Pauletta Yates of Virginia, Garner Yates of Pennsylvania, Bob Yates of North Carolina, and a nephew/brother, Jerry (Lee) Yates of Ohio; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; Numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville, Wednesday, January 18, 2017 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Memorial Services will be conducted Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville. Inurnment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
