Julius Howard Britt, Sr.

Mr. Julius Howard Britt, Sr., 86, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta. He was born May 22, 1920 in Gwinnett County, Georgia the son of the late Mr. Amos Britt and Mrs. Lois Merritt Britt. He was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the 65th Engineer Battalion of the 25th Division. Achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant, Mr. Britt served in the Pacific Theater and participated in the Guadacanal, Northern Solomon, and Luzon battles and campaigns. He was awarded the Phillippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He was often engaged in conversations about this period of history by those who realized he was one of the few remaining veterans of this era. In addition to his work history in local industry, he spent many years raising registered cattle and was an avid gardener. Mr. Britt was a Christian and a member of the Baptist Faith serving for many years as a deacon in his church. Being loved and affectionately called “Papa” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was often called “Papa” by neighbors and acquaintances in the community. Mr. Britt’s presence will be missed and memories of his life will endure. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Britt and Joseph Britt, grandson, Vic Thompson and great-grandson, Keaton Meyer. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Josephine Childs Britt of Douglasville; his children and their spouses, Don and LaFaitha Britt Tolliver of Douglasville, J.H. and Teresa Britt of Villa Rica, David and Sue Britt Mundt of Concord, Nelson and Nita Britt of Woodland, AL, Victor and Peggy Britt Thompson of Bremen, Rick and Lois Britt Pace of Tallapoosa; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 3:00 PM from the Douglas Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with Dr. Phillip W. West and Dr. Danny Watters officiating. Interment will follow at New River Community Church Cemetery in Douglasville with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers: Travis Tolliver, Jonathan Britt, Nathan Britt, Seth Pace, Ryan Pace, Billy Meyer with a place of honor held for deceased grandson, Vic Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters, LaDonna Tolliver Meyer, Brittanie Tolliver Sewell and Jerry Sewell, Amber Britt Stone and Kevin Stone, Julie Britt Murkot and Robert Murkot, Lindsey Britt, Christy Thompson Grimes, Lisa Thompson, Ashley Pace, Christina Britt, Christy Pace, Ricky, Amanda and Cindy Pace. Great Grandchildren bearing beautiful memories; Cody and Mikaela Meyer, Ava Sewell, Tanner and Hanna Sewell, Katy, Tyler, and Aleia Murkot, Megan and Avery Grimes, and Josephine Pace. Military Honors will be rendered by the Fort McPherson Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglas Chapel on Saturday, July 15, 2006 from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
