Leonard Van Dockery, 71, a devoted husband, father, and respected member of his community, passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2026. Born on March 31, 1955, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late James William Dockery and Bertha Rose Burnett Dockery, Leonard lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep love for his family.

Throughout his career, Leonard was known as a diligent insulation factory worker, a role in which he took great pride. His proudest accomplishment was providing for his family, a responsibility he embraced with unwavering commitment and tireless effort. Those who knew Leonard admired his strong work ethic and the steady support he offered to those he loved.

Leonard’s interests and hobbies reflected a man who enjoyed both quiet and lively pursuits. He found joy in deer hunting and fishing, passions that connected him with nature and the simple pleasures of life. At home and with friends, he cherished working puzzles and engaging in card games, with a special fondness for playing Dominos every Tuesday night with his brothers, a ritual that brought great joy and camaraderie. Leonard’s musical spirit shone through his love of singing gospel music and playing his guitar, sharing moments of heartfelt expression and connection. Additionally, he was a dedicated fan of science fiction, particularly Star Trek and Godzilla, delighting in the imaginative worlds these stories offered.

Leonard’s legacy extends through his beloved family. He is survived by his wife, Mindy Dockery, who stood by his side for 48 years of marriage  throughout their life together. His sons, Jason Dockery, (Jackie), of Dallas, Georgia, and John Dockery, (Shirley) of Villa Rica, Georgia, carry forward his name and values. Leonard’s affection and care also extended to his siblings: Dorothy Dunn and her late husband Melvin Dunn of Temple, Georgia; Yvonne Harvey, (Mike)  of Gay, Georgia; Sharron Dockery of Temple, Georgia; Gene Dockery, (Evelyn) of Temple, Georgia; Jerry Dockery, (Kim) of Carrollton, Georgia; Jesse Dockery (Linda) of Temple, Georgia; Tim Dockery, (Sue)  of Rockmart, Georgia; and Ivory Dockery of Temple, Georgia. His grandchildren, Austin, Tyler, Jeremiah, Alexis, Evan, Alan, and Travis will remember their Papa's love and wisdom. The family circle further includes numerous nieces and nephews whose lives were touched by Leonard’s presence. His life long friends, Michael and Melissa Perry also survive. 

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, James William Dockery and Bertha Rose Burnett Dockery; and several siblings, including David Dockery, Frank Dockery, Judy Black, and his late brothers-in-law Charles Black and John Harvey, as well as two sisters-in-law Brenda G. Dockery and Brenda Dockery . Their memories remain an integral part of the family’s heritage.

A visitation will be held on Thursday,  May 28, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Jones-Wynn - Villa Rica Chapel located at 306 Westview Drive, Villa Rica, GA 30180. This will be followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Dute Dunn, Tyler Mowry, Charles Black, Alan Dockery, Evan Dockery and Travis Dockery.

Leonard Van Dockery’s life was a testament to steadfast love, dedication, and simple joys. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him—his family, friends, and community. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion and perseverance that will inspire those who loved him for years to come. May he rest in peace.
