Lois “Diane” Smallwood, 72, of Douglasville, GA, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026. She was born on January 13, 1954, the daughter of the late Merrick Smith, Jr. and the late Louise Jane Gribble.
A beacon of strength and love, Diane was known affectionately as the best mom and grandmom to her family. Her unwavering dedication to her family was apparent in everything she did, and she found true joy in cooking for those she cherished.
Diane's spirited personality was complemented by her feisty nature, which endeared her to all who knew her. She approached life with a strength that was truly inspiring, having bravely faced and triumphed over cancer four times. Her resilience was a testament to her selflessness and strong character, traits that she carried with pride, stemming from her own robust family background.
Among her many accolades, she was particularly proud of her role as a grandmother, a title she held dear to her heart. Diane's passion for family shaped her life and was evident in her every action. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by those fortunate enough to have experienced her love and warmth.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband Terry Dale Smallwood.
She is survived by by her daughters Kristy and Michelle; sons, Donnie Ellis and Dean Ellis; sister Kim Apostolec, brothers, Jerry Smith, Mike Smith and Scott Smith; seventeen grandchildren, James, Gunnar, Heaven, Sydni, Emily, Grace, Skyler, Corban, Colton, Cameron, Aiden, Liam, Noah, Tori, Jace, Bonnie, and Olive; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Diane leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unyielding devotion to her family. Her impact on those around her will surely resonate through the generations to come.
