Mr. Lowell D. Chambers, Sr., age 90, of Palmetto, Georgia went to walk with the Lord and reunite with his wife, Nell of 65 years on Friday, August 26, 2011. He served his country during World War II in Europe. He received a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart with two oak clusters and was awarded the âFrench Legion of Honorâ medal. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and spent the last five months of the war as a POW. He was a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a lifetime member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and was a member of the American Legion for the past 70 years. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Georgia, Villa Rica Lodge # 72 F&AM. Mr. Chambers was a member of the United Association of Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union #72 for 60 years. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church in Douglasville where he served as a deacon for many years. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Doug Chambers and wife, Sandi of Lawrenceville, Janet Disque and husband, Lyn of Newnan, Mike Chambers and wife, Sheila of Palmetto, Debbie Cox and husband, Wayne of Hull, Cindy Cheney and husband, Mark of Douglasville, Cricket Strickland and husband, Strick of Carrollton; brother, Bob Chambers of Stockbridge; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Carr and husband, Wayne of Crossville, AL; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday, August 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM from the Douglas Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny League officiating. Interment will follow at Melwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain, Georgia with members of the Georgia National Guard serving as pallbearers and rendering military honors. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglas Chapel Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
