Lydia Fields Prather, age 74, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 26, 2026, surrounded by family and friends, and holding the hand of the love of her life, Ronald. She was born on July 5, 1951, in Villa Rica, Georgia. Lydia spent her life serving others with quiet strength and compassion. She worked for many years at Camp Cap Company but found her greatest joy as a beloved lunch lady at Bay Springs Middle School where she cared for generations of students.
A devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church for over 40 years, Lydia faithfully served in WMU, lovingly known as the “Sonshine Sisters,” and dedicated decades to the nursery and children’s church. Her life was a reflection of her unwavering faith and she loved others as Christ did.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Ronald Prather; her children, Heather McDonald of Mesa, Arizona, Hannah (Nathan) Alderson of Huntsville, Alabama, and Nathan (Shannon) Prather of Birmingham, Alabama; and her eight cherished grandchildren: Sam, Kuba, Christian, Lena, Rosalind, Matilda, Jasper, and Jonah. She is also survived by her sisters, Joy Brown of Villa Rica, Alisa Dickson of Rockmart, and Connie (Steve) Adams of Temple, along with many nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.
Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, James Lovie Fields (Maxine) and Millie Ann Wix Conner (Lucius), and her beloved sister and best friend, Nonie Cheatwood.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the many loved ones who visited (over 390 times) in her final month. Special thanks to Joy, Connie, Wendi, Shane, Raylene, Kaylee, Happy, Tammy, Janice, and the members of Shiloh Baptist Church, for helping make it possible for Lydia to remain at home with dignity. We are also deeply grateful to Eternal Faith Hospice and the many doctors and nurses who cared for her over the past six years.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Villa Rica Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at 11:00 AM. A private interment will follow at Glenn Memorial Park in Villa Rica.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help reduce student lunch debt in honor of her life’s work. https://allforlunch.org/one-time-donation/ and put “Lydia” in the donation specifications box.
