Maria "Daisy" Delay

Daisy Delay, born on January 29, 1929, the daughter of the late Paula Garza and Roberto C. Rutledge, passed away on February 13, 2025, leaving behind a cherished legacy of kindness, joy, and community spirit with a smile that would brighten a room. 

Daisy was known for her faith and she loved going to church, where her warm smile and loving nature touched the lives of many. An avid sports enthusiast, she found happiness in the excitement of football and other sporting events as she worked as a dedicated Athletic Secretary for McAllen ISD. Where she freely shared her joy and enthusiasm with everyone she encountered. Daisy's outgoing personality and caring demeanor made her a beloved figure in the community; she was always ready to lend an ear, or a hand, and offered understanding to those who needed it. Daisy’s life was a testament to the power of love and friendship. Those who knew her will remember her for her ability to make others feel heard and valued. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In addition to her parents, Daisy is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Richard Leland Delay, Sr.; her grandson, Karim Sidik; and her sisters, Belen Watts, Pearl Bean, Angelica Olivares and Rachel Lambeth. 

She is survived by her daughter, Hilda Delay; son, Dr. Richard Delay, Jr.; brother, Sgt. Ricardo (Alma) Rutledge and family; grandchildren, Zaheen Sidik, Cole Delay, and Parker Delay; nieces and nephews, Gloria (Robert) Galvan and family, Hope Watts and family, Paula (David) Moffitt and family; as well as several great-nephews and nieces, great-great nephews and nieces and her many beloved friends.

In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Daisy Delay was cremated. Her inurnment will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
