Elizabeth Farlowe, 96, died peacefully at home in Douglasville on Saturday, September 24, 2005. Mrs. Farlowe was born in Washington, North Carolina, on January 15, 1909 to William Lafayette Hodges and Lena Elsie Hodges. She was born in her family homeplace, a 3000 acre working farm called Belllefont Plantation. The plantation home was built in 1751 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a two story white structure with massive fireplaces and was ransacked by Union soldiers during the Civil War. It was renovated and is still owned and occupied by members of the Hodges family. Mrs. Farlowe was the second child in a family of 9 brothers and sisters. The first from her family to attend college, Mrs. Farlowe graduated from East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, North Carolina. She taught school in Jamestown, North Carolina, where she met Junius Kemp Farlowe. They were married in 1936. Mr. Farloweâs career as a meteorologist took them to Charlotte, Birmingham, and finally to College Park where they settled in 1942. Mrs. Farlowe worked as a homemaker taking care of their three daughters until she returned to the classroom at Parklane Elementary School in East Point in 1956 where she taught for another 17 years. After retirement in 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Farlowe moved to Douglasville. Mrs. Farlowe was a member of Cliftondale United Methodist Church. She was also active in the Cliftondale Community Center where she was an avid card player and was also a member of the Garden Club. Mrs. Farlowe was preceded in death by her husband, Junius Farlowe, and her daughter, Elizabeth Farlowe Boggs. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-laws, Kennette and Jack Shannon of San Jose, California; Jaine and John Ladieu of Douglasville, who served as her primary caregivers in her later years; Larry Boggs of Villa Rica; brother Rufus Hodges of Marietta; grandchildren Lisa Boggs Justus of Atlanta; Kirk Boggs of Douglasville; Stephen Boggs of Smyrna; Hugh âQuinnâ Brock of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Jeff Brock of Providence, Rhode Island; Dr. Susannah Brock Cornes of San Francisco; ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Farlowe will be Tuesday, September 27, at 2:00 in the chapel at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home on Midway Road in Douglasville. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:30 until 8:30.
