Mavis Erlene Camp Boyd, of Roanoke, Alabama, formerly of Villa Rica, Georgia, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the age of 71, following a stroke in March. Born in Douglas County, Georgia on February 17, 1937 at the home of her grandmother Inez Mayfield, Erlene was the oldest daughter of Mr. James Buford Camp and Mrs. Mary Frances Mayfield Camp. She was raised in the Atlanta area before graduating from Smith Hughes High School. She married Mr. Lowell Hollis Boyd on December 22, 1953 and lived in Atlanta where she began classes at Georgia State University. Erlene and her husband were members of Grant Park Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for several years. In 1956, Erlene began working at American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) where she held several positions in office and industrial applications before retiring in 1990 after 34 years. While at AT&T, she served as president of the Pioneer Club, a community service organization. She was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars through the Pioneer Club for United Way, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and other charities. Following the birth of their son, David Alan Boyd in 1960, Erlene and Lowell moved back to their hometown of Villa Rica, Georgia in 1964 where they were members of Flat Rock Baptist Church. At Flat Rock, Erlene served as a Sunday school teacher. Later, she and her husband became members of Powell Chapel Methodist Church where she worked as church secretary and financial secretary. After living in Villa Rica for 41 years, she and her husband moved in 2005 to a farm in Roanoke, Alabama where they were members of the Antioch Christian Church. Erlene enjoyed gardening, her three grandchildren and was an avid genealogist. She not only traced her own family history, she also researched the ancestors of several other family members and friends. Erlene is preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Susan Margaret Boyd. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lowell Hollis Boyd of Roanoke, Alabama; son and daughter-in-law, David and Erin Boyd of Newnan, Georgia; three grandchildren, Erica Caroline Boyd, David Jordan Boyd and Mary Margaret Boyd; three sisters, Ann Carden of Carrollton, Georgia, Lynn Bentley of Douglasville, Georgia and Elaine Camp of Roanoke, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica with Rev. Ronnie Puckett and Rev. Jimmy Drew officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Samples, Joe Carden, Ken Obukuro, Jordan Boyd, Joey Chandler and Mike Bentley. Interment will follow in Powell Chapel Cemetery on Flat Rock Road in Villa Rica with Rev. Anthony Herren officiating. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica, Friday, December 5, 2008 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
