Maxine Elizabeth Benns, 82, of New York passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 10:30 pm. She was born on October 3, 1943, in Birmingham, AL to the late Joseph Matthews and the late Bernice Williams.

Maxine, who was soon known as “Mac” by family and friends, relocated to New York City with her family as part of the Great Migration when Maxine was just a toddler.

Maxine embraced the love of Jesus and led a life marked by dedication to her Lord and Savior. Her strength and profound commitment were known to those she loved and served.

Her educational achievement, earning a degree from The City University of New York, reflected her determination and love for learning, traits that she carried forward into her career and personal life. As a teacher early in her career, Maxine demonstrated unwavering diligence and professionalism, enriching the lives of countless students and staff through her work. During the course of her life, she was a versatile professional who has worked in bank marketing, sales, and as a real estate agent. Later in life, she came full circle as a college bookstore manager / educator / administrator guiding young people and scaffolding their transition into adulthood.

Maxine’s personality was defined by her deep-rooted values; she was family-oriented, a dedicated church member, and a strong, independent leader. These qualities endeared her to friends and family alike, who admired her resilience and unwavering work ethic. She was the spouse of an Army veteran and the marriage lovingly produced 3 beautiful children.

As an active member of the community, Maxine spent time as a job developer at a Senior Employment Center in the Center for Regional Planning and Design. Also, she dedicated years of service as a Big Sister with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham and was an active member of B.A.U.B (Birmingham Association of Urban Bankers), where she assisted in establishing financial planning programs for high school students.

Beyond her work and community service, Mac enjoyed simple pleasures that brought joy to her days. She found happiness in shopping, gardening, and listening to music, and was a keen fan of western movies and African and Native American cultures; interests that reflected her vibrant spirit and zest for life.

She is survived by her three daughters, Tasha Gray (Bernard), Tanicia Shine (Christopher), and Tiffany Thomas; grand-children, Brittany Thomas and Robert Perrier Jr; brothers Alfred Tyree Jr. (Judith) and Edward Tyree Sr. (Grace) and sister Deveonne Brachman (David) and several nieces, nephews and cousins that will miss her dearly.

Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, yet her legacy of strength, devotion, and kindness will forever remain a guiding light. Mac will be remembered with great respect and affection by her family, friends, and all who were privileged to know and love her.
