Melvin Howard Jones, affectionately known as “Mel” and “Coach Jones”, passed away on December 4, 2024, at his home in Powder Springs, Georgia, at the age of 86. He was born on June 30, 1938, in Isle of Wright, Virginia, to the late Mr. James Jones, Sr. and the late Mrs. Gertrude Spratley Jones.
Mel dedicated a remarkable 46 years to education, shaping the lives of countless students through his roles as a teacher and coach. Melvin's commitment to education was evident throughout his illustrious career.
He served as the Advanced Industrial Arts teacher as well as a tenure as head football coach and track coach at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia, and his influence extended far beyond the classroom. In recognition of his profound impact, Lafayette named the Industrial Arts building in his honor and a scholarship was established in his name by Peter Beldon. In addition to his teaching career, Melvin also served as assistant football coach at the college level for Virginia Union University and Hampton University. A proud military veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, an experience that shaped his character and commitment to service.
Melvin was a formidable coach who had the unique privilege of guiding aspiring athletes to greatness. Notably, he coached NFL superstars including Lawrence Taylor, Mel Gray, and Ron Springs, and his dedication to his team earned him a nomination for NFL High School Coach of the Year in 1996. His engaging personality was marked by a contagious sense of humor, an upbeat demeanor, and an unwavering commitment to his students’ success. For nine years, Melvin served as a Deacon at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple in Hampton, Virginia, where he offered spiritual guidance and leadership within his community. Additionally, he was actively involved with The Gideons International, contributing to the evangelistic efforts to spread his faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ in his community and throughout the world.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of mentorship and encouragement, as he was known for always having a quote to share—a testament to his wisdom and positive outlook on life. His commitment to education and his community will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by his brothers, Charlie Jones and James Jones, Jr; sister, Gladys Jones Hill.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 30 years, Mrs. Carolyn Jones; daughter, Adrienne Starkey and her husband Rory, Sr.; grandchildren, Rachel Alcocer and her husband Jesus, Amaya Starkey and Rory Starkey, Jr; brothers, Horace Jones and his wife Joann, and Thomas Jones and wife Beverly; sister, Virginia Morton; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, both at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home - Douglas Chapel.
