Merrill I Hughes, age 95, of Lithia Springs, GA, passed away Monday, August 8. He was born in Erie, PA on May 23, 1921, the son of Harry M. and Dorothy B. Hughes. Merrill was devoted to his extended family always ready with a practical joke exhibiting a great sense of humor. He was a retired vocational educator and administrator. Dedicated to his Lord, he served many years of his life as a Presbyterian Elder and teacher at Media Presbyterian Church, Media, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Gladys M Hughes, three sisters and one brother. He is survived by daughters, Paula H. Snelling, and husband, Robert of Douglasville, GA, Rebecca H. Nagy and husband Ed of Southbury, CT, and Barbara H. Adams and husband Tom of Butler, PA, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.He marched under General George S. Patton during WWII as a sergeant in the 70th Infantry Division. Returning home he completed his education and began a distinguished career in vocational education as a shop teacher. His great career accomplishment was the development of the vocational education program and curriculum in Delaware County, Pennsylvania overseeing the construction of three full-time VOTECH schools and the implementation of over 70 VOTECH programs within them. He also served as president of the National Council of Local Administrators.A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, August 20 in the chapel of Fairview Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Pleasantville, PA, with interment to follow.
