Norma Cooksey Green passed into the arms of God on Friday, October 7, 2016 After six years of bravely fighting and living with cancer, she attained her ultimate healing from her heavenly Father. Norma was 77 years old. Norma Cooksey was born in West Point, Georgia on March 18, 1939. She was the first child of Gaines and Adell Cooksey. Upon graduation from high school, âCookie,â as she was lovingly called by her childhood friends, attended Howard College in Birmingham, Alabama where she met Hilton Green, her husband of fifty-four years. The young couple taught briefly in Alabama before relocating to Austell to teach at Austell School. Norma earned a Masterâs degree in Education from Auburn University and a Specialist degree from Samford University, formerly Howard College. Most of Normaâs teaching career was in Douglas County, and her favorite grade to teach was third. Norma often said, âChildren may not remember what you have taught them, but they will always remember how you treated them.â This truth is based on Normaâs interpretation of Matthew 22: 37-39. In these verses, Christ instructs us to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself. During her teaching career, she was inducted into the Alpha Sigma chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international teachersâ sorority. In the fall of 2015 she was awarded a âLife Long Learner Awardâ from the Orlean Beeson College of Education located on Samford University.Norma loved investing herself in the lives of children. She was often found teaching Sunday school or working in the nursery at First Baptist Douglasville and at First Baptist Lithia Springs. She and Hilton moved to Douglas County in 1970 and became active members at Douglasville First Baptist. In 1980, they moved their church membership to Lithia Springs Baptist Church. Most recently, they worshiped at Central Baptist Church. Norma is survived by her husband, Hilton M. Green, and their two sons, Morgan and John. Morgan is married to Donna R. Green, and John is wed to Beverly D. Green. Norma has one granddaughter, Annie E. Green. They had a treasured and special relationship, one not often shared between grandchildren and grandparents. Normaâs brother William and his wife Peggy have two daughters, Christiana and Sara. Christina is married to Ben Powers. They have two girls, Sofia and Sienna. Sara is wed to Toby Palmer, and they have three sons: Rob, Jackson, and Lucas. These precious children have enjoyed fun days with Aunt Cookie making crafts and splashing in the pool. Before Annieâs birth, Norma and Hilton served as hometown grandparents to David and Lucie Morrisâ three sons. Kenneth, Daniel and Michael Morris spent many Easter afternoons hunting eggs and December holidays making Normaâs famous treats. This family dyed eggs with the Greens at Normaâs surprise birthday party last Palm Sunday. A service celebrating the life of Norma will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 1 pm at Central Baptist Church. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers contributions be sent to the 20/20 Giving Program at Central Baptist. The church is located at 5811 Central Church Rd, Douglasville, GA 30135.Messages of condolence to the family may be sent at www.jones-wynn.com.
