Paul Russell Haffly, 94, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023. He was born on October 10, 1928 in Belleville, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late William James Haffly and the late Willa Schilling Haffly.
Reverend Haffly was ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1954, and he served Lutheran churches in Confluence, PA, Savannah, GA, Nashville, TN, Mobile, AL, and Austell, GA. He also served as an interim pastor at Lutheran churches in Cumming, GA and Atlanta, GA. Rev. Haffly earned a Bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. He also had a theology degree from Gettysburg Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA. Rev. Haffly played an active part of the Daily Bread Ministry at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. He is the oldest pastor and ordained minister in the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Haffly is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Olson Haffly; brother, William J. Haffly III.
He is survived by his daughter, Johanna (Skip) Welch of Douglasville, GA; sons, Paul David Haffly of Counce, Tennessee, Stephen (Cynthia) Haffly of Counce, Tennessee; brother in law, John (Sally) Olson of Sierra Madre, California; grandchildren, Carlin Haffly, Philip (Jessica) Welch, Noelle (Christian) O’Hara, and Andrew Welch; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville. Rev. Haffly will lie in state on Friday, January 20, 2023 at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 7:00 PM at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Reverend Mike Bovingdon will be officiating. The inurnment will be held at a later date in Belleville, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or Nativity Lutheran Church in Austell, GA.
