Priscilla Deborah Miller, age 86, a dedicated educator, passed away on September 30, 2024. She was born on September 8, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Mr. Harry Starks and the late Mrs. Alice King Starks.
Priscilla made significant contributions to both her profession and her passions throughout her life. With a robust career spanning 37 years as a teacher in Philadelphia, Priscilla inspired countless students and fostered a love for learning in those she taught. Her dedication to education did not wane after her primary teaching years. After she retired and moved to Georgia, she continued to influence young minds as a substitute teacher in Clayton County until 2016. Priscilla's commitment to her profession was underscored by her academic achievements, including a master’s degree in education from Beaver College in Glenside, Pennsylvania (now Arcadia University) and a Bachelor’s in Music from New York University in the 1950s. Furthermore, she was a trailblazer at Overbrook High School, being the first Black cheerleader there, a testament to her courageous spirit and determination.
Beyond her professional life, Priscilla was a strong, smart, and loving individual, whom many cherished for her warmth and compassion. Her passion for the arts shone brightly in her enjoyment of both art and music, particularly jazz. She found joy in singing with the choir at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia, and displaying her musical talent by playing the piano at New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These accomplishments reflected not only her talents but also her deep-rooted faith and community involvement.
Priscilla Miller leaves behind a legacy defined by her positive impact on her students and her unwavering dedication to her passions. She will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know her and will be deeply missed.
