Mr. Robert C. Howell, age 93, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica. He was born August 21, 1917 in Young Harris, Georgia the son of the late Mr. William David Howell and the late Mrs. Amanda McClure Howell. Mr. Howell proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. During his service, he served in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, first as infantry, and the later on as an engineer. One of Mr. Howellâs duties was removing land mines and dud bombs that had been dropped by allies but did not detonate. After his military service, he worked as a carpenter until his retirement. He was a member of the VFW Post 10798 of Douglasville and the American Legion #145, where he was named Legionnaire of the Year. He was of the Baptist Faith and was devoted to the Lord and his church. He was a member of New Georgia Baptist Church. He enjoyed attending a Menâs Bible Study on Wednesday mornings at First Presbyterian Church in Douglasville. He was a past member of the Lithia Springs First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School. In his later years, Mr. Howell made it his mission to attend all the events in Douglas County commemorating veterans. Mr. Howell enjoyed participating in the Douglasville Fourth of July Parade and the Veterans Day parade each year. On Memorial Day, he participated in the annual Memorial Day Service at Sunrise Memorial Gardens and he participated in Flag Day programs in June. He visited funeral homes every time a veteran passed away in his area, whether he knew them or not. Heâd visit the families and gave honor to his fellow comrade with a salute of gratitude for their service. He was honored by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners with an engraved brick in the Pathway of Service Walkway at the Douglas County Courthouse for his devoted service to country and community. He loved his family and friends. He was a loving man who enjoyed spending time with his many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta Howell; second wife, Martha McMichen Howell; stepdaughter, June Roland; stepson, Tony Pilgrim; and sister-in-law, Marie Howell. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Virgie and Ervin Chandler of Douglasville; brother, Herman Howell of Albany; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Perry Daniell of Douglasville, Carol and Wilbur Tyner of Athens and Lucy Durand of Austell; stepsons, Jimmy Pilgrim of Douglasville and Leonard Pilgrim of Rome; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, March 11, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Douglas Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville with Dr. Jim Burdette and Dr. Marion Beaver officiating. Mr. Danny Howell will provide the eulogy. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
