Robert Roberts

July 2, 1926 — May 6, 2019

Mr. Robert Glenn Roberts, age 92, of Villa Rica, passed away, Monday, May 6, 2019. He was born July 2, 1926 in Villa Rica the son of the late Mr. Samuel Watson Roberts and the late Mrs. Claire Otwell Roberts. Robert went to work plowing the fields at the age of 8 years and at 13 years old he kept up all the farm vehicles. Soon after he graduated Villa Rica High School in 1943, he was drafted into the Army in 1944 and sent to Trier Germany to fight in the European Theater of WWII. He was assigned to the 10th Armored Command in the Ghost Division. (They did not wear any identification on their persons or their vehicles and they travelled mostly at night behind the lines.) He fought from Trier Germany to the Czechoslovakian Border and down into Austria. During this time over there, he had 5 half-tracks shot out from under him, (one blew him down a mountain side through a tree); Another time, he and eight more soldiers were left in town to fight a town full of Germans. They all managed to get into the woods and were MIA for days while Germans were walking all around them at night; another incident when he was in a foxhole and all kinds of planes were bombarding them and he eye-balled the pilot until he crashed into their foxhole near him. Robert had another horrifying experience when he was checking a building one night and a German put a gun to his back and told him to surrender as he was going upstairs. The German was at the bottom of the stairs the next morning. Robert got him with the butt of his gun. Another bad experience was when a German tank joined their convoy one night, and big MM guns were right at his head. Robert passed the word to the front tank; it pulled into the woods and blew the German tank right near Robert which affected his hearing. The worst experience was the Battle of Creilsheim. They were being bombarded continuously for more than a week without food and gasoline. It was in a German book that this was one of the bloodiest wars. Robert went through all this and was on his way to fight in Japan when he turned 19 years of age. After her got back to the States he was sent to Finance School and he reenlisted again. He had two plus years in the Army, receiving an EAME Ribbon with two battle stars and a Combat Infantry Badge.Robert met his wife Pauline Carden Roberts after he returned from the Army. They both went to work at Lockheed Corporation in Marietta, GA. In July of 1953, Robert was sent to the Dale Carnigie Management School in Atlanta, GA and was promoted to a Production Supervisor. At one time he supervised 9 shops; ie, Propellers, Engines, Structures, Atmospheric instruments, Skis; etc. Robert was employed as either a Leadsman or a Supervisor for 36 years at Lockheed. He was well-thought of in the Plant as a “trouble-shooter” when they needed help in doing something. Robert and Pauline retired from Lockheed in 1989 and started enjoying traveling which included Alaska, Canada, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Mexico, Hawaii and seven Island cruises. In 1990 they went to the Passion Play in Oberammergau and toured Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Also visited most of the U.S. states. Robert’s hobbies were gardening, wood and metal work and tinkering with any electronic or electrical equipment. He also loved antique cars. He was also interested in Genealogy, joined the Carroll County Genealogical Society, and wrote the story of his life and several other family history books. Robert was honored as a WWII Grand Marshall at the Villa Rica Gold Dust Parade on Saturday, September 6, 2014 and Memorial Service at the Mill that night. He was also honored a few years ago at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, GA and when he was asked if they could honor him for serving in WWII. They brought 200 soldiers over from Ft. Benning, formed lines on either side of an area and rolled him in his wheel chair through the soldiers. They gave him praises and citations, and each man shook his hand. Robert could not believe what they had done for him. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Villa Rica, GA for 43 years and married to his wife for 70 years. Robert was a very hard-working, very intelligent and a very good man and he will be greatly missed! In addition to his parents, he was preceded in the death by his brother, Samuel Watson “W” Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Carden Roberts of Villa Rica; son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherry Roberts of Woodstock; sister, Ruth Roberts Holder of Temple; grandchildren, Jennifer and Paul Johnson of Atlanta, Brian Roberts and Johnna Szegda of Atlanta, Jennifer and Paul Johnson of Atlanta; one great-grandson, Finn Archer Johnson of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews also survive.
