Ruth Jones

Mrs. Ruth Gilland Jones, 96, of Lithia Springs, Georgia passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014. A native of Villa Rica, Georgia, she was born March 29, 1917 the daughter of the late Mr. William Stephen Gilland and the late Mrs. Rossie Frances Johnson Gilland. Ruth loved our Lord and others with a passion. She was a wife, mother, and teacher. In 1934 she graduated from Villa Rica High School and was a 1938 graduate of GSCW, Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville. She began her teaching career in Porterdale as a first grade teacher. In 1940 she married Lanier H. Jones. They purchased their first home in Atlanta and joined Beecher Hills Baptist Church. Teaching took a back seat until her children started college. Ruth taught first grade in the Atlanta Public School System and then the Douglas County School System. She was honored in 2008 by being selected as a Member of Distinction in the Douglas County Retired Educators Association (DCREA). She passed on her love of education to her children who graduated from Georgia Tech, Georgia, and West Georgia. Ruth was proud of her memberships in two sororities, Alpha Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma. She had a close relationship with Sorority Sisters and with Her Sisters in Christ from Cascade Heights, Lithia Heights, and the First Baptist Church Lithia Springs. She was most proud of her Children, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren. She will be missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lanier Hendricks Jones on January 16, 2005 and her granddaughter, Stephanie Jones. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie Jones Rosser and her husband, Jere, of Woodstock; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Lanier Jones and his wife, Joan, of Marietta and Ted Gilland Jones and his wife, Brenda, of Marietta; three grandchildren and their spouses, Valerie and Dana Thomas of Virginia, Allen and Valerie Goble of Marietta and Chad and Kathryn Rosser of Newnan; six great-grandchildren, Brinley Thomas, Brody Thomas, Alyssa Goble, Zachary Goble, Cory Simpson, and Miller Rosser. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville, Thursday, February 20, 2014 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville with Rev. Ron King officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Jones may be made to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes, PO Box 329, Palmetto, GA 30268.
