Shirley Stricklin

Shirley Ann Moore Stricklin, age 85, of Douglasville, GA passed away on August 16, 2017 after a brief illness. A native of Bennettsville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Cary A. Parker Moore, Sr. and the late Nina Fletcher Moore Niven. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Cary Parker Moore, Jr. She was a graduate of Bennettsville, SC High School, Winthrop College and Jacksonville University.Mrs. Stricklin loved her childhood in Bennettsville and the virtues of growing up in a small town. The many friends she made in first grade remained close for their entire lives. She was a member of many high school clubs and organizations and held several leadership positions. After high school, she majored in Business at Winthrop College and worked with the South Carolina Tax Commission after graduation. After the birth of her beloved children and relocating to Jacksonville, FL, she enrolled at Jacksonville University and earned an education degree. She chose teaching because she loved her family and wanted to be home as much as possible, including after school and during the summer. She taught at Parkwood Heights Elementary for 25 years before retiring in 1995. She had a deep faith and was a member of the Arlington Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville since 1968. She was active in many areas of the church, was elected an Elder, and served on several committees. She was recognized by the Presbyterian Women in 2009 with an Honorary Lifetime Membership for her years of devoted work to her church and faith. Mrs. Stricklin had one primary hobby – “going places”. She loved to travel, regardless if it was short trips around Jacksonville or longer trips to distant destinations. Her favorite trips included Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and visiting with family in South Carolina. Other family vacations included camping and fishing adventures. She is survived by two sons, William Steven Stricklin and wife Robin Lynn Stricklin, of Douglasville, GA; David Moore Stricklin and wife Angela Marie Stricklin, and two grandchildren, Andrew Thomas Stricklin and Zachary Alan Stricklin, of St. Johns, FL; sister-in-law, Betty Neal Moore of Laurens, SC and two nephews, Cary Parker Moore and James Derrick Moore. Services will be at the Arlington Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 2, 2017. Interment will be in Bennettsville, SC.
