Stanley P. Herndon, Sr.

Mr. Stanley P. Herndon, Sr., 85, a former resident of Atlanta, Georgia from 1921 until he retired to Ocean Shore Blvd., Ormond Beach, Florida in 1987, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2007. He was born August 25, 1921 in Atlanta, Georgia the son of the late Charles Mauton Herndon and the late Mrs. Jennie Mae Barker Herndon. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He married Gloria Friend on September 1, 1945 in Long Beach, California. He had worked for Southern Railway for 23 years. He was a 1953 graduate of Emory University in Atlanta where he earned his Juris Doctorate Degree. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi. Mr. Herndon served as the Fulton County Judicial System Assistant Solicitor General and later was appointed Head of the Fulton County Public Defender's Office. He was also a member of the Atlanta Bar Association and the Georgia Bar Association. He was a 32 nd degree Mason and was a Shriner. He attended the Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Gloria Friend Herndon of Ormond Beach, FL; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Jim Bangert of Wayzata, Minnesota; one son and daughter-in-law, Stanley P. Herndon, Jr. and Elisa Herndon of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers and sister-in-law, C.M. and Betty Herndon of Mableton and Harold Herndon of Newnan Georgia; 2 granddaughters, Kelly King and her fiancé Paul Berg of Minnesota and Holly and Bryan Cody of Corolla, NC; one great-grandson, Will Cody of Corolla, NC; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 2:00 PM from Northside United Methodist Church , 2799 Northside Drive , Atlanta , GA with Dr. G. Gil Watson as officiating clergy. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, July 12, 2007 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta . Those desiring to do so may make contributions in memory of Mr. Stanley P. Herndon, Sr. to the Hospice of Volusia/ Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Fl. 32129.
