Sylvia Elsie Harris Baker, 87, of Douglasville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026. She was born on January 14, 1939, the daughter of the late William Curtis Harris, Sr. and the late Elsie Dewberry Harris.

Sylvia married the love of her life Jimmy on July 4, 1958. Sylvia found immense joy in her role as a mother. She welcomed her first child, Angela, on June 19, 1962, and completed her family with the birth of her second daughter Becky on November 23, 1964. Her dedication to her family was evident in every aspect of her life, and she took great pride in their achievements and happiness.

She volunteered at the Douglas County Retardation Association where she was the first director. She got a grant to build a facility on Duralee Lane in Douglasville. It was during this time that Sylvia started substitute teaching at Lithia Springs High School and later became a Career Guidance Counselor. She started classes at West Georgia College and then later attended Mercer College where she pursued a career in Case Work. While attending Mercer College, Sylvia applied for an apprenticeship with DFACS. After successfully graduating from Mercer in 1988 she began her career in social work. Sylvia retired from DFACS in 1988 after twelve years. Sylvia was a member of Sunset Hills Baptist Church for many years where she served as a Sunday School teacher, church pianist and choir member. She also dedicated many years to ministering her Christian faith to the jail ministry. Sylvia’s life was a testament to love and commitment.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Judge James Thomas Baker; daughter, Rebecca Baker Taylor; and brother William Curtis Harris, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Steve Green of Douglasville; son-in-law, Stacy Taylor; sister, Ann and Gerald Harmon of Powder Springs; two grandchildren, James Zachary Green and Colton Thomas Edward Taylor; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday August 6, 2026 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday August 6, 2026 with Rev. Ikey Watson and Dr. Jim Grieme officiating at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunrise Gardens of Memories.

Flowers are accepted, however; contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
