Thomas Kennedy, 88, of Douglasville, GA, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025. He was born on September 22, 1937, the son of the late Riley Walter McGhee and the late Mary Jane Wheatley Kennedy.
He lived a rich and fulfilling life, dedicating many years to both his career and the passions that brought him joy.
Thom proudly served in the United States Army for approximately six years, a commitment that exemplified his dedication to service and country. After his military tenure, he embarked on a distinguished career with the Department of Defense, ultimately retiring as Chief of Engineers. Spanning about 35 years, his career was predominantly spent at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where he became an integral part of the Communications Team for the Space Shuttle program. He helped design the first orbital space flight, Columbia-STS-1. His contributions to the field left a lasting impact, furthering the progress of space exploration.
Outside of his professional life, Thom had a vibrant personality that drew people to him. He was an avid chef, renowned particularly for his brisket, which became a hallmark of family gatherings and celebrations. His love for baseball was evident in his unwavering support for the Atlanta Braves, and he extended his passion for the sport by coaching little league baseball, imparting not only skills but also important life lessons to his players.
Thom found immense joy in spending quality time with his family, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. He was also a skilled carpenter who enjoyed working with his hands and took great pleasure in woodworking projects. Among his various interests, Thom had a special love for old trains, and he played a significant role in helping to restore an old locomotive in El Paso, Texas, which exemplified his deep appreciation for history and craftsmanship.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter Michelle Renee Williams; brother, Jack Wheatley; sisters, Mary Lou Wheatley and Doris Wheatley.
He is survived by his loving spouse Peggy Lewis Kennedy; daughter, Donna W. (Jonathan) Durant of Douglasville, GA; sons, Wendell (Kim) Kennedy of Douglasville, GA, and Anthony Raymond Williams of Douglasville, GA; sisters, Donita Wheatley of Cleveland, OH and Judith Logan of Lima, OH; brother, Jim Wheatley of Cleveland, OH; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel.
Interment will follow at Sunrise Gardens of Memories, Douglasville, GA.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication that will be felt by all who knew him. Thom will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and hobbies but also for the love and dedication to his family. He touched many lives during his time and will be missed dearly.
