Thomas "Tom" Charles Detscher

February 23, 1936 — September 6, 2021

Thomas Charles Detscher passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021, surrounded by his children. Tom and his beloved wife, Betty Lou Detscher, were long-time residents of Fairfield and were married 59 years. Betty Lou passed away last June. Tom was born on February 23, 1936, in Wolfboro, New Hampshire, the youngest of four children. He grew up in Wolfboro and graduated high school from Admiral Farragut Academy in New Jersey. He went on to receive his college degree from New York's Columbia University, where he majored in economics and was captain of the rowing team. Tom and Betty Lou were married in June 1961 and had a wonderful life raising four children in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia before settling permanently in Georgia. Tom had a long and successful career, starting out in the textile industry with Burlington Industries and finishing up as a software consultant with American Software in Atlanta. Tom was widely known for his love and support of children. He volunteered for the Fairfield Kiwanis Club and served as president and in various leadership positions. He was also a Court Appointed Special Advocate for many years, helping numerous children in the community who were removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. Tom was the father of four children: Carla (Anthony-deceased) Kalogeridis, Melissa (Tom) McAfee, Chuck Detscher, and Greg Detscher. While spending his weekdays working long hours, Tom devoted weekends to his children, coaching their baseball and football teams and attending countless equestrian competitions. His number-one priority was always his children, and he will be remembered for the example of devoted fatherhood that he set for the entire family. Tom was an active member of his church and was fearless and faithful in his devotion to God. He served in many volunteer roles in the church, including Sunday School teacher and on the board of directors. With his wife's help, Tom took tender care of his sister Dorothy in the final years of her life. Tom had a multitude of family, friends, and colleagues that loved to hear his stories and opinions on politics and national events. He was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Falcons and always had a favorite pet cat. Left to honor Tom and remember his love are his four children as well as 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Tom greatly cherished his family in New England, which included many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Returning to New Hampshire and Lake Winnipesaukee was one of his favorite trips. A Celebration of Life will be held this fall online so that all his family and friends may participate. Please contact daughter Carla for additional information at [email protected].
