William Stanislaus Hoffman, Jr., 71, of Temple, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Tranquility Hospice in Austell, Georgia. Mr. Hoffman was born on March 2, 1937, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, the son of the late William S. Hoffman, Sr. and the late Anna Fagan Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman authored 43 non-fiction books in his lifetime on a wide range of subjectsâtrue crime, political exposes, and athlete and celebrity autobiographies. The highly acclaimed David: Report on a Rockefeller (1971) was a Time Magazine bestseller; The Stockholder (1968) was selected by Business Week Magazine as "one of the ten best business books of the year"; The New York Times called The Bridge Bum (1975) "one of the two best autobiographical bridge books ever written"; and the true crime book Unholy Matrimony (1986) was made into a CBS-TV mini-series. In addition, Mr. Hoffman also had two nationally syndicated columns, wrote for many newspapers and major magazines, and appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, including Johnny Carson, David Frost, Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, James F. Hoffman, and Joseph M. Hoffman; and his former wife, Patricia Smith Hoffman. Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Judith Lynn Reeves Hoffman of Temple; three children and their spouses: William S. Hoffman, III, of Washington, DC; Terri Hoffman Escalante and Julio R. Escalante, of Queens, NY; John P. Hoffman, of Brandon, FL; Alicia R. and Michael White, of Villa Rica; Ethan A. Lewis, of Raleigh, NC; and Micah A. Lewis, of Temple; three grandchildren, Kashmir C. Hoffman, James Patrick Escalante, and Evan M. White; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica with Rev. Wendell Rush officiating. Interment will follow at Draketown Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica on Friday, July 18, 2008 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
